Mondy "was my hero and inspiration. Without his encouragement and support, I would not be a member and chief of the New Orleans Fire Department today." The Rev. Mondy was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He was a graduate of McDonogh No. 35 High School and a former drill sergeant in the Marine Corps. He was ordained as a minister in 1992 by the Rising Sun Missionary Baptist Association and served at New Gloryland Baptist Church. He was one of the founders of the Black Association of New Orleans Fire Fighters and a member of New Orleans Fire Fighters Association Local 632. Survivors include his wife, Nancy C. Mondy; a son, the Rev. Jerome Mondy; three daughters, Patricia Thomas, Nina Jones and Michele Woods; a brother, Othan N. Mondy; three sisters, Evelyn Edwards, Rosetta Arceneaux and Yvonne Smith; and seven grandchildren. A wake will be held today at 7:30 p.m. at Franklin Avenue Baptist Church, 2515 Franklin Ave. A funeral will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Providence Memorial Park. Boissiere-Arceneaux- Labat Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
