Montville, the second in command of the department, died at his New Orleans home after choking on food, the Orleans Parish coroner's office said. Montville, 44, who had not been seen since Friday night, was found by a neighbor Sunday morning, Westwego Police Chief Paul Clement said. Montville was pronounced dead Sunday at 10:15 a.m., according to coroner's office chief investigator John Gagliano. "It does appear that he was dead several hours," Gagliano said. "Capt. Montville was loved and appreciated by all those with whom he worked and all those who worked for him," Clement said in a statement. Montville joined the Westwego Police Department in 1976 and served under four police chiefs, rising from the rank of patrolman to police captain. He had been on sick leave since July 2, Clement said. He said Montville had worked closely with him in obtaining more state and federal grants for the department. Montville also helped set up the department's first set of regulations and assisted in community-oriented policing programs, developing a closer relationship between the community and the department. Clement said he is recommending that Lt. Mike Regina be promoted to the rank of captain to replace Montville. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
