Cabrini's First Principal, Sister Aloysius, Dies At 90 Times Picayune 06-21-1996 ************************************************* Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ************************************************ Sister Aloysius, a Missionary Sister of the Sacred Heart and the founding principal of Cabrini High School, died Thursday of cancer at her residence. She was 90. She was a teacher for 58 years and a nun for 74 years. Sister Aloysius was born Mary Cecile Almerico in New Orleans. She attended St. Mary's Italian Elementary School in the French Quarter and McDonogh No. 35 High School. She entered the religious life at 18 and made her final vows in 1932. She received a bachelor's degree in education and a master's in guidance and administration from the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania and also attended the Pontifical Institute in Rome. Sister Aloysius taught in elementary and secondary schools in Brooklyn, Denver, Scranton, Philadelphia, Seattle and Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., besides New Orleans. In New Orleans, she was a teacher and principal at St. Mary's School on Chartres Street. In 1959, she became the first principal of Cabrini High School, where she spent 35 years, 10 as principal and the remainder as guidance counselor and bursar. In 1985, she formed the Association of Cabrini Alumnae, and in 1995 the school library was dedicated in her honor. She is survived by several cousins. A Mass will be said Saturday at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church, 3368 Esplanade Ave. Visitation will be today from 6 to 9 p.m. at the chapel of Cabrini High School, 3400 Esplanade Ave., with a prayer service at 8 p.m. Burial will be in St. Louis Cemetery No. 3. Lamana-Panno-Fallo Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
