All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ************************************************ Dr. Arthur Pemberton Burdon, a former psychiatry professor at the Tulane University and Louisiana State University medical schools, died Friday of a heart attack at his home. He was 71. Dr. Burdon was born in St. Louis and lived in New Orleans for many years. He received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Tulane and his psychiatric training at Harvard Medical School. He practiced psychiatry in New Orleans from 1960 through 1986 and was a founder of the Burdon-Smith Clinic. He also was a clinical professor of psychiatry at both Tulane and LSU medical schools. From 1986 through 1994, he was medical director of the post-traumatic stress disorders unit at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in New Orleans. From 1994 until his death, he was a psychiatric consultant for the state of Louisiana. He was on staff at Touro Infirmary for 35 years. Dr. Burdon was a colonel in the Army Reserve Medical Corps, a member of Mayor Marc Morial's Military Advisory Committee, a senior elder in the Presbyterian Church USA, a committeeman on the national and local boards of the Presbyterian Church, on the board of directors of the YMCA, and a member of the Order of St. Lazarus, several patriotic organizations, Carnival organizations and civic and church groups. Survivors include his wife, Jane Talmage Burdon; a son, John Arthur Burdon of Albuquerque, N.M.; three daughters, Paula Harstad of Richmond, Va., Lois Pendergrass of Mobile, Ala., and Susan Coleman; two sisters, Helen Burdon Price of Grandview, N.Y., and Judith Burdon Lucky of Santa Barbara, Calif.; and 11 grandchildren. A funeral will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church, St. Charles Avenue at State Street. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
