Shaffer, a founding partner and former chairman of the obstetrics and gynecology department at Browne-McHardy Clinic, died Wednesday of a heart attack at his home. He was 60. Dr. Shaffer was born in Strawn, Texas, and lived in Metairie for many years. He was a graduate of St. Edward's University in Austin and the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. He interned at Duke University, was assistant chief at Webb Air Force Hospital and completed his residency at the University of Oklahoma. He was a captain in the Air Force. Dr. Shaffer developed the Rape Crisis Program at Lakeside Hospital, which provides help to rape victims through the Jefferson Parish coroner's office and district attorney's office. He was named chief of the obstetrics and gynecology department at Lakeside Hospital in 1973 and was a member of the hospital's board of directors from 1974 to 1978. He also was president of the medical staff. He was chairman of the obstetrics and gynecology department at Browne-McHardy Clinic from 1986 to 1994. He was a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, a diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a member of the Advisory Council of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Louisiana Section, the Jefferson Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Jefferson Parish and Louisiana medical societies. Survivors include his wife, Paula Jeanne Mackey Shaffer; a son, Victor A. Shaffer; a daughter, Jennifer Shaffer Nolan; his mother, Ann Sadner Shaffer; and two sisters, Patricia M. Trussell and Linda Schaab. A Mass will be said today at 1 p.m. at Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home, 3827 Canal St. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Hope Mausoleum.
