All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ************************************************ Sister Mary Charles Clement, a principal, teacher and member of the Marianites of Holy Cross, died Monday of cancer at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Nursing Home in Opelousas. She was 73. Sister Mary Charles was a teacher and principal at elementary schools in New Orleans and Franklin and high schools in Ville Platte, Morgan City, Franklin and New Orleans. From 1969 to 1973, she was the provincial administrator for the Marianites of Holy Cross. From 1973 to 1989, she was dean of students, a professor of education, director of institutional research and president at Our Lady of Holy Cross College in New Orleans. In 1989, she became principal of St. Peter Elementary School in Gueydan, working there until a year ago. Sister Mary Charles was born in Plaquemine. She entered the Marianites of Holy Cross in 1940 and made her first profession of vows in 1942. She received a bachelor's degree in education from Our Lady of Holy Cross College and a master's degree from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. She did graduate work at Incarnate Word College in San Antonio. Survivors include four brothers, Joseph Carl, Peter Bertrand, Charles Louis and Gerard Clement; and a sister, Laura Clement. A wake will be held today at 6 p.m. at Our Lady of Holy Cross Convent Chapel, 4123 Woodland Drive, Algiers. A Mass will be said Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the chapel. Burial will be in Our Lady of Holy Cross Convent mausoleum. Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
