All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ************************************************ Sister Mary Elizabeth Wooley, a retired teacher and Sister of Mount Carmel, died Thursday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Motherhouse. She was 82. In 1960, Sister Mary Elizabeth received from Bishop Abel Caillouet special recognition for having founded the citywide Parish Sodality of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Her efforts also were recognized by the Archdiocesan Christian Life Communities in 1985 at St. Louis Cathedral. Sister Mary Elizabeth was born Alice E. Wooley in New Orleans. She graduated from Mount Carmel Academy and received bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Loyola University. She entered the congregation of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in 1935, made her first profession in 1938 and took her perpetual vows in 1941. She taught for almost 50 years at Mount Carmel schools in Abbeville, Lafayette, New Orleans and Rayne, including St. Augustine, St. Dominic and St. James Major schools in New Orleans. She also taught and was the principal at Our Lady of Prompt Succor in Westwego and St. Joseph the Worker in Marrero. She founded Mary's Pre-Kinder, forerunner of the present Cub Corner, at the Mount Carmel Motherhouse in New Orleans. She was the preschool's director from 1975 to 1987. Survivors include a brother, Harold A. Wooley of Jefferson, and a sister, Rita Clare Wooley Jamison of Dallas. A Mass will be said today at 2 p.m. at the Mount Carmel Motherhouse Chapel, 420 Robert E. Lee Blvd. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Louis Cemetery No. 3.
