All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ************************************************ John Gilmer Menville, a retired urologist, died Monday at Chateau de Notre Dame Nursing Home. He was 88. Mr. Menville was born in Houma and lived in New Orleans many years. He graduated from Jesuit High School and earned a bachelor's of science and a medical degree from Tulane University. He retired as an associate, clinical professor of urology at Tulane in 1976. He was a Eucharistic minister at Touro Infirmary from 1988 until his death. In October 1959, he performed the first kidney transplant in the South. Throughout his career, he was on staff at Touro Infirmary and Southern Baptist, Hotel Dieu, Mercy, Sara Mayo, Montelepre and Pendleton Memorial Methodist hospitals. He retired as a urologist in 1986. He was past president of the New Orleans Graduate Medical Assembly and past captain of Manresa Retreat. He was an American College of Surgeons fellow and a diplomate of the American Board of Urology. He also was a board member of the American Cancer Society and the Cancer Association of Greater New Orleans; a committee member of United Way and the American Red Cross; and a member of the Orleans Parish Medical Society, the Louisiana Medical Society, the American Medical Society, the Southern Medical Society, the American Urological Association and the Boston, Stratford, New Orleans Country and Serra clubs. He was a lieutenant commander in the Naval Reserve. Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Hardie Menville; a daughter, Myra Loker Menville Ancira; a stepson, Charles Smither; two stepdaughters, Sandy Haygood and Lulie McDonald; a sister, Muriel Menville Dupont; and three grandchildren. A Mass will be said today at 2:30 p.m. at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. Visitation will begin at 12:30 p.m. Burial will be in Lake Lawn Park.
