All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ************************************************ Dr. Ben Freedman, a retired doctor and professor at the Tulane University School of Public Health, died Thursday at Chateau de Notre Dame Nursing Home. He was 91. Dr. Freedman was born in Wilmington, Del., and had lived in New Orleans since 1925. He graduated from the Tulane University School of Medicine, did postgraduate study at Vanderbilt University and received a master of public health degree from Johns Hopkins University. He was involved with public health work in Louisiana for 40 years and taught epidemiology, public health administration and other subjects at the Tulane School of Public Health for many years. He was the author of "The Sanitarian's Handbook: Theory and Administrative Practice," a text used in 75 countries. He was a major in the Army during World War II and worked as a liaison officer surveying Norwegian health needs after the German occupation. He was a former president of the American Public Health Association and in 1969 received the Walter S. Mangold Award of the National Association of Sanitarians for meritorious contributions to sanitation and public health. He also received the Louisiana Public Health Association's Founders Award, the Alfred E. Clay Award for Outstanding Services to Children from the Children's Bureau of New Orleans in 1973, and awards from the American Association of Public Health Physicians, the Louisiana Association of Homes and Services for the Aging, the Southern Branch of the American Public Health Association and the American Lung Association of Louisiana. He was a member of the Temple Sinai Brotherhood, the Jewish War Veterans and B'nai B'rith. Survivors include his wife, Miriam Katz Freedman, and a sister, Miriam F. Bailkin. A graveside service will be held today at 10 a.m. at Hebrew Rest Cemetery No. 3, 2100 Pelopidas St. Bultman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
