All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ************************************************ Philip Sidney Pugh III, a retired lieutenant colonel in the Army, died Saturday at Gulfport Memorial Hospital of complications after a heart attack. He was 71. Col. Pugh was born in Crowley in 1924, and moved to New Orleans in 1928. He graduated from Marion Military Institute in Alabama and attended Louisiana State University before enlisting in the Marine Corps in 1943. He served in the 1st Marine Parachute Regiment in the Pacific during World War II, and later as a member of the 2nd Battalion, 28th Marines, 5th Division, which fought at Iwo Jima. He also participated in the occupation of Japan. After the war, he was in the shrimping business in Campeche, Mexico. In 1950, he received a commission in the Army, serving in Korea, Germany, Ethiopia, Taiwan, the Dominican Republic and Vietnam. He received the Bronze Star and the Army Commendation Medal with oak leaf clusters. A graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi, Col. Pugh was a life master of the American Contract Bridge League, a league-certified director and a league-certified star teacher. He was a member of the Boston Club of New Orleans; the Pass Christian Yacht Club; the Pass Christian Isles Golf Club; the Pass Christian Historical Society; Trinity Episcopal Church, Pass Christian; and the Kappa Alpha Order. Survivors include his wife, Cherry Phillips Pugh; his mother, Nelsie C. Pugh of New Orleans; a brother, Robert Nicholls Pugh of Lexington, Ky.; two sisters, Jane Pugh Ferguson of New Orleans and Dorothy Pugh Deloteus of Bowling Green, Ky.; and 13 nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, Pass Christian. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. in the church parlor. Burial, with full military honors, will be in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C., at a later date. Riemann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
