Hester Plauche Sr., executive vice president of Tharp-Sontheimer-Tharp Funeral Home and vice president of Delta Life Insurance Co., died Saturday of a heart attack at Touro Infirmary. He was 84. Mr. Plauche, a lifelong resident of New Orleans, was the grandson of the founders of Tharp-Sontheimer-Tharp funeral home. Plauche graduated from Warren Easton Boys High School. He attended Jesuit High School, Tulane University and Soule Business College. In 1940, he started at the family funeral home and began at the life insurance firm one year later, said his son, H. Hester Plauche Jr. A member of the New Orleans Cotton Exchange, he founded the Bienville Club and also served as captain of the Athenians for more than 30 years, his son said. Plauche was past president of the Metairie Rotary Club, a member of the Society of the War of 1812-State of Louisiana, and was on the board of Goodwill Industries of New Orleans. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of National American Bank of New Orleans for 24 years. He was also a member of the Pickwick Club, New Orleans Country Club, Stratford Club, Sons of the American Revolution, Lakeshore Club, the Founders of New Orleans, France Amerique and Pass Christian Isles Golf Club, and was active in numerous Carnival clubs. Survivors include his wife, Jessie Tharp Plauche; a son, H. Hester Plauche Jr.; a sister, Mildred Plauche Landry; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. A funeral will be held Wednesday at noon at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6 to 10 p.m. and Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Burial will be in Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum.
