He was 95. Mr. Turfitt was born in Shelby, Miss., and graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1924. He entered the banking business in New Orleans and later was an investment counselor and was involved with commerce and real estate. He eventually sold his businesses to devote his full time to church and civic work. Mr. Turfitt was for many years an elder, clerk of session and trustee at St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church, where he also taught Sunday school for 40 years. He was elected moderator of the presbyteries of New Orleans and South Louisiana. He was involved in the establishment of many new churches in the New Orleans area. In 1965, he was named a fraternal delegate of the Presbyterian Church, U.S., to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. He was a member of the boards of the Association for Retarded Citizens, Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Texas, the Evergreen School in Minden, Westminster Towers and the Bethany/Covenant Homes. His fund-raising efforts were recognized by Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn., which awarded him an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree in 1967. Survivors include a daughter, Margaret Ann Turfitt Lindsey, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held today at 5 p.m. at St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church, 1545 State St. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Tharp-Sontheimer-Tharp Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
