"Art" Burke, a retired executive sports editor for The States-Item, died Friday of congestive heart failure at his home. He was 82. Mr. Burke was executive sports editor of The States-Item from 1964 to 1975, when he retired after 45 years on the staff. Burke joined The New Orleans States, the predecessor of The States-Item, in 1930 and covered prep and college sports while attending Tulane and Loyola universities as a journalism major. A member of the U.S. Naval Reserve, Burke was called to active duty in October 1940 and served in the Pacific in World War II until January 1946. He returned later that year to The States as a general assignment sports reporter and covered prize fights. Mr. Burke was a lifelong resident of New Orleans and a member of the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame, the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation Hall of Fame and the Diamond Club of Greater New Orleans. He was a past chairman of the Sugar Bowl Sports Selection Committee. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 6640, Legion Post No. 175 and the Forty and Eight Voiture Locale No. 1522. Survivors include two sons, Donald A. and Arthur "Artie" I. Burke Jr.; two daughters, Arleen B. Nicosia and Barbara K. Burke; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. A funeral will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Memorial Blvd. Visitation will be today from 6 to 10 p.m. Burial will be in Hope Mausoleum.
