Jones, executive dean of Delgado Community College's City Park Campus, died Tuesday of undetermined causes at her home. She was 52. A native of Laurel, Miss., Dr. Jones worked for Delgado for 23 years as a faculty member and administrator. She began her Delgado career in 1975 as an adjunct instructor of mathematics at the West Bank Campus and became a full-time faculty member three years later. From 1981 to 1987, she was chairwoman of the West Bank Campus' Division of Math, Science and Technology and directed the campus' Learning Resources Center. From 1987 to 1990, she was chairwoman of the City Park Campus' Division of Science, Math and Allied Health, after which she was chairwoman of the Division of Science and Math on the City Park Campus for three years. In 1993, Dr. Jones was named executive dean, responsible for the daily operations of the 10,000-student, 57-acre City Park Campus. As executive dean, she played a major role in developing and implementing a college- wide planning system. She worked with faculty members and administrators to revise the college's promotion and grievance polices. In addition, she established Delgado's Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Technology, which provides computer training and support to upgrade the skills of faculty and staff members and integrate technology into the classroom. "She was respected by her colleagues because she came up through the ranks," said J. Berengher Brechtel, executive dean of Delgado's West Bank Campus. "She dedicated a good portion of her life to this college." Brechtel, who said he knew Dr. Jones for 20 years, said she was talented and known for her dedication. "She was totally committed," he said. "She had great intensity." Prior to working at Delgado, Dr. Jones taught math and German at Xavier University, the University of New Orleans, the University of Mississippi and the University of Maryland's Army Education Center in West Germany. She earned a bachelor's degree in math and master's degree in German from the University of Mississippi and a doctorate in educational administration from UNO. She also took graduate courses at Xavier and Louisiana State University. Dr. Jones was a member of the Mathematical Association of America, Phi Delta Kappa honorary education fraternity, the American Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges, the Louisiana Association of Developmental Education, the National Academic Advising Association, the American Educational Research Association and the Southwest Educational Research Association. Survivors include a son, Jonathan Jones; a daughter, Jennifer Jones; her mother, Margaret Brown of Bruce, Miss.; and two sisters, Tammy Mauldin of Laurel and Linda Inniss of San Antonio. A funeral will be held Friday in Bruce. Parker Funeral Home in Bruce is in charge of arrangements.
