He was 91. Mr. Mayer was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He graduated from Isidore Newman School, where he earned his nickname because he excelled at football, said his son, Charles Buck Mayer. He attended Tulane University and was a member of the first graduating class of Louisiana State University's School of Banking of the South. Mr. Mayer worked for the Whitney for 52 years, retiring as senior vice president in 1990. He also had been a director and vice chairman of the board of the Whitney Holding Corp., the bank's parent organization. He was a former leader of the boards of the German Protestant Orphan Asylum Association and the Asylum Foundation, the Institute of Mental Hygiene, the local chapter of the American Red Cross and the United Fund for the Greater New Orleans Area (now the United Way). He was the first chairman of the Community Chest to raise more than $1 million. He also served on the boards of Crippled Children's Hospital (now Children's Hospital) and the Greater New Orleans Regional Foundation (now the Greater New Orleans Foundation). He was a member of Christ Church Cathedral, where he was senior warden of the vestry. He was a former president of the Boston Club and a member of the Lakeshore Club and the Louisiana Club. In addition to his son, survivors include a daughter, Susan Mayer Hardtner of Shreveport; three grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Christ Church Cathedral, 2919 St. Charles Ave. Burial will be private. Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
