Brent Jr., a multi-instrumentalist and arranger who toured with rock and soul bands and tutored scores of local musicians, died of hemorrhaging on Nov. 28 at his home. He was 58. Mr. Brent was a lifelong resident of Harahan. He graduated from De la Salle High School and attended Loyola University School of Music, where he was instrumental in establishing the jazz program. Known for his talent on the guitar and saxophone, he worked with the Contours, the New Era, Wayne Cochran & the C.C. Riders, Luther Kent & Trick Bag, the Chicken Hawks and the Mambo Brothers, among others. His also was a composer and arranger for the Ronnie Kole Septet, Ann-Margret, Irma Thomas and the Tonight Show Band. Survivors include Mr. Brent's mother, Shirley Brent; and a sister, Kathleen Brent Skelton. A Mass will be said today at noon at Tharp-Sontheimer-Tharp Funeral Home, 1600 N. Causeway Blvd. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Carrollton Cemetery.
