All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ************************************************ Isabelle Saloom Haik the mother of a former New Orleans City Council member and a founder of a Delta Delta Delta sorority chapter -- died Wednesday at her New Orleans home. She was 86. A native of Lafayette, she attended Mount Carmel Academy and Southwestern Louisiana Institute, where she was a founding member of its Delta Delta Delta chapter. She graduated from Newcomb College of Tulane University with a degree in art and psychology. She moved to New Orleans in 1948. Mrs. Haik was fluent in French, Spanish and Lebanese and taught English to immigrants arriving in the United States during World War II. She married Dr. George M. Haik after the war and helped him establish the George M. Haik Eye Clinic, which she managed. A sketch artist, she opened Carrollton Framing in New Orleans, where she employed artists so they could pursue their craft. Mrs. Haik also was a local authority on Creole-Cajun cooking, appearing on local television shows to discuss recipes. She edited the Metairie Park Country Day Cookbook to raise money to design and build the Country Day Founder's Terrace. "She made a great crawfish bisque," said her daughter, former City Council member Suzanne Haik Terrell. Mrs. Haik was a former president of the Orleans Parish Medical Society Auxiliary and the Louisiana State Medical Society Auxiliary. She held officer positions with the auxiliary of the Hotel Dieu Hospital and the Eye Foundation of America and helped organize fundraising campaigns for the United Way. "My mother never met a stranger," her daughter said. "From the person she met in the grocery line to her grandchildren's friends, she made everyone feel like her friend and never forgot a single person." Other survivors include her three sons, all ophthalmologists, George M. Haik Jr. and Kenneth G. Haik of New Orleans and Barrett G. Haik of Memphis, Tenn.; and eight grandchildren. The service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. Burial will follow in Metairie Cemetery. Visitation begins at noon.
