The New Metairie Cemetery Submitted by Larie Tedesco Times Picayune November 9, 1873 ************************************************ Copyright. It will be remembered that this cemetery was the celebrated Metairie Race Course, with which so many pleasant reminiscences are connected. But the changes and improvements have been so great that but few of the old habitues of the place would now recognize it. The "Old Track" is sadly change, and where before was life, enthusiasm and the intensity of pleasure, is now being made the resting place of the dead. This new cemetery contains sixty-four acres of ground. The roads or walks are already shelled to the extent of nearly three miles. The reporter was informed by Mr. Harrod, the gentleman in charge of the improvements of the ground that the prospects already for the sale of the lots, were remarkably encouraging, on lot already having been laid out and bought for a tomb, and this in so short a time since the intention of laying out this ground for a cemetery. Active work is now going on, and very soon we will be able to chronicle the completion of the grounds for the purposes intended. Trees are shortly to be planted, together with many other embellishments which doubtless will, besides the many other attractive features already displayed and intended, to make the Metairie Cemetery one of the most desirable and popular pieces of burial in our city. It is intended hereafter to give a more extended review of the grounds and the patrons of this new cemetery.
