All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ************************************************ Dorothy Sturken Randolph, a retired professor of social work at Tulane University and former director of social services at Charity Hospital, died Sunday at her home. She was 88. Mrs. Randolph was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She graduated from Xavier University and received a master's degree in social work from Louisiana State University. After 14 years as a social worker with the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, she joined the faculty at the Tulane University School of Social Work in 1965. She was the first African-American teacher in the school's master's program. She retired in 1999. During her tenure she was appointed the director of social services at Charity Hospital. This position was a cooperative endeavor between the state and Tulane. After retiring from Tulane, Mrs. Randolph continued working as a counselor in child custody cases from her home until 2005. Mrs. Randolph "lived her life through her chosen profession," her family said. "She was a social worker and her life's purpose was the quest for social and economic justice." She was a former board member of many organizations including Christopher Homes, Covenant House of New Orleans, Xavier University, the Urban League and Crescent House. She was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, the NDT and Chic Clique bridge clubs and the Ladies Greenery Garden Club. Her husband, Allison B. Randolph Jr., owner of several companies including KBCE Radio in Alexandria and Ran-Der Industries in Morgan City, died in 2005. Survivors include a son, Allison B. Randolph III; three daughters, Ann Elizabeth Randolph, Penelope Randolph Biagas and Vaughn Randolph Fauria; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great- grandchildren. A Mass will be said today at 9:30 a.m. at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, 2916 Paris Ave. Visitation will begin at 8:30 a.m. Burial will be private. D.W. Rhodes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
