Paul Breaux, founder of Breaux Mart Supermarkets, died Monday in New Orleans. He was 86. A native New Orleanian, Mr. Breaux attended Soule Business College and served in the United States Air Force in World War II. Mr. Breaux first entered the grocery business in 1933 working at a corner grocery store owned by his father. Mr. Breaux opened his first store, B&C Supermarket, with his brother-in-law Joseph Cuccia in 1946. Breaux Mart was founded in 1969 with two locations on the west bank of the Mississippi River. Breaux Mart's popular Severn Avenue store in Metairie opened in 1971. According to his family, Mr. Breaux's desire to sell quality products at a low price pushed him to break state-mandated milk pricing laws in 1974 and to open a warehouse store that sold goods at a discount. Mr. Breaux retired in 1992 and sold his grocery business to his son Barry Breaux, who now operates five Breaux Mart Supermarkets in the New Orleans area. Mr. Breaux was an avid supporter of the arts and contributed to the New Orleans Museum of Art, The New Orleans Symphony, The New Orleans Ballet and the New Orleans Audubon Institute. He was also a major contributor to the North Charleston Fire & Police Departments in Charleston, S.C., where he had lived since 2002. Mr. Breaux was preceded in death by his wife, Adrienne Gaudin Breaux, and three sisters Thelma Baudry, Verna Egle and Della Cuccia. In addition to his son Barry, survivors include a son, Paul Breaux of Ruston; six daughters, Lynne Breaux Arapis of Washington, D.C., Brenda Kindelan of Germantown, Tenn., Beverly Breaux of Senatobia, Miss., Karen Mosca of Harahan, Julianne Pulvirenti of Chevy Chase, Md., and Lisette Robins of Old Greenwich, Conn.; a brother, Edwin Breaux of New Jersey; 17 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. A Mass will be said Wednesday at noon at the Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home chapel, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m.
