He Was 66. Mr. Uttal Directed Local Productions Of Plays Such As 'The Rose Tattoo,' 'Lips Together, Teeth Apart,' 'Speed-The-Plow' And 'Frankie And Johnny In The Clair De Lune.' Colleagues And Cast Members Remembered Mr. Uttal For The Painstaking Care He Devoted To Every Aspect Of A Production, Such As Finding A Woman Who Could Help Actress Lyla Hay Owen Develop A Sicilian Accent When She Played Serafina Delle Rose In 'The Rose Tattoo.' 'Nothing Missed His Eye,' Said Al Shea, A Theater Critic And Longtime Friend. 'There Wasn't One Aspect Of His Productions, For Good Or Bad, That He Didn't Have His Finger In. . . . He Worked His Butt Off For Any Show He Had His Name On.' 'He Was An Extraordinary Talent, And His Death Is A Great Loss To The Theater Community,' Said Carl Walker, A Local Theater Director. 'He Was A Terrific Fellow.' Mr. Uttal, Who Was Born In Chicago, Moved To New Orleans As A Teen-Ager And Began Acting At Le Petit Theatre Du Vieux Carre. He Graduated From Isidore Newman School And Tulane University, Where He Earned An Undergraduate Degree And A Master Of Fine Arts Degree In Theater Directing. In College, Mr. Uttal 'Worked All The Shows And Really Believed In The Theater,' Said Shea, Who Met Him At Tulane. 'He Longed To Make It Better.' He Also Directed Actors Such As Jessica Tandy And Roscoe Lee Browne In Plays At The Festival Of Two Worlds In Spoleto, Italy, Founded By Composer Gian Carlo Menotti. He Made His New Orleans Directorial Debut With 'The Fantasticks' At Gallery Circle Theatre In 1962. An Advocate Of The Method Theory Of Acting, Mr. Uttal Worked With Actors For Months To Help Them Develop Full-Bodied Characterizations And Work As An Ensemble, Owen Said. 'He Was Not A Community-Theater Director Who Said, 'Learn Your Lines, Get Out On Stage And Try Not To Bump Into The Furniture.' ' ' 'Second-Best' Was Not In Ivan's Vocabulary,' Shea Said. 'It Had To Be The Best.' Owen Said That, At First, She Didn't Think She Was Right For The Role Of Serafina. ' 'You Are,' He Said. 'Believe Me.' When I Won A Big Easy Award For My Performance, I Thanked Him For Believing In Me More Than I Believed In Myself.'
