(Donaldsonville, La.) 1871-current, January 20, 1912, Image 1 Venerable Sister of Charity Dead. - Sister Edwige, a member of the noble Catholic order of Sisters of Charity, died at the New Orleans Female Orphan Asylum at dawn Wednesday, the 10th inst., aged 90 years. Funeral services were held at 9 o'clock the following morning in St. Theresa's Church, and interment was made in the tomb of the Sisters of Charity in St. Louis Cemetery. Sister Edwige was a Miss Caroline Lee, and was born in this city. Though her parents were not of that faith, she joined the Catholic church at the age of eighteen years, and some years later offered herself for membership in the order of the Sisters of Charity, serving her novitiate at the mother house in Emmittsburg, Md. The first seven years of her life as a Sister of Charity were spent in Donaldsonville and in Mobile, and then she was sent to New Orleans, where for the past fifty-six years she had been caring for motherless children at the New Orleans Female Orphan Asylum. Not withstanding her advanced age, she was active up to last May, and had been confined to bed only a few weeks. As far as is known she left no relatives.
