McMAHON, Sr., aged seventy-four years, native of County Fermaugh, Ireland, a resident of this city the last fifty-four years. The friends and acquaintances of the deceased and those of his sons, Patrick J., Thomas J., Joseph J., William and Peter, are respectfully invited to attend the funeral, which will take place This (Thursday) Afternoon at 4 o'clock, from his late residence, Magazine and Delord streets. ANCIENT ORDER OF HIBERNIANA, Branch No. 10. - Officers and members are hereby notified to attend the funeral of our late brother member, THOMAS J. McMAHON, which will take place at 4 o'clock THIS (Thursday) AFTERNOON, from his late residence, Magazine and Delord streets. By order of D.P. Mahoney, President. - B. BUCKLEY, Secretary. source: Times-Picayune (New Orleans, LA) Thursday, March 29, 1894, page 3 DEATH OF THOMAS J. McMAHON. - Last night, at 10 o'clock, Mr. Thomas J. McMahon, one of the oldest and best-known citizens of New Orleans, passed peacefully away. Mr. McMahon was born in county Fermaugh, Ireland in 1820 and was 74 years old at the time of his death. He emigrated to the United States in 1839, when he was 19 years old. He came directly to New Orleans, where he engaged in horse dealing, a business at which he was so successful that he established the undertaking business in 1858, in this occupation he so prospered that he built up one of the largest establishments in this city. Three years ago he formed a limited company with his four sons, Thomas, Joseph, William and Peter. Owing to failing health two years ago he turned the entire control of affairs over to his sons. Mr. McMahon was married to Miss Bridget King, who is now also very ill. Their union was blessed with seven children, five sons and two daughters, all of whom are grown and still survive to mourn the loss of a kind and generous father. Mr. McMahon was a fine business man, a public-spirited citizen and true to those whom he loved, winning their respect and confidence by his upright and conscientious dealing. McMahon was interred yesterday afternoon. Mr. McMahon was one of the oldest and most respected citizens of New Orleans. The remains were taken from St. Patrick's church. The cortege was a mile in length and the numerous floral offerings which decorated the coffin were a strong tribute of the respect with which the deceased was held by his fellow men. The mourning was not contained to any to any creed or class and the funeral was in itself a precious consolation to the family. source: New Orleans Item (New Orleans, LA) Friday, March 30, 1894, page 8 Funeral of Mr. T.J. McMahon. - The mortal remains of T.J. McMahon were followed to the cemetery on Metairie Ridge, from St. Patrick's Church, yesterday afternoon, by a very long line of carriages in which were the relatives and sorrowing friends of the deceased gentlemen. The floral tributes were many, beautiful and costly. Mr. McMahon had lived a useful and exemplary life.
