Creamer marykcreamer.00@gmail.com July 18, 2022, 1:14 am Times-Picayune (New Orleans, LA) Sunday, 24 November 1940, page 9 FORMER CAPTAIN IS LAID TO REST Funeral services for Gustave Pertling, 74 years old, retired secretary of the Jackson Brewing Company who in the 1880s was captain of the Mississippi river steamboat Grover Cleveland, were held Saturday at the auxiliary funeral home of Jacob Schoen and Son, 3827 Canal street. Religious services were held at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary church. Mr. Oertling, who died Friday, had been ill for two years. A native of New Orleans, he lived at 1500 Leda street. After he retired as captain of the Grover Cleveland, he entered the hardware business in New Orleans with his father, Henry Oertling. When this firm went out of business, Gustave Oertling became associated with the New Orleans Brewing Company, which later became the Louisiana Brewing Company. He left this firm to become associated with the Jackson Brewing Company. He retired 14 years ago. Following his retirement from the brewing business he formed a company known as the Crescent Broom Manufacturing Company, 600 St. Claude street, and was president of it until it was dissolved several years ago. Surviving are two children, Warren H. Oertling and Chester G. Oertling; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
