Creamer marykcreamer.00@gmail.com July 19, 2022, 12:28 am source: Published in NOLA German Newspaper The numbers of the Old Guard are dwindling. Once again, one of the most well- known and respected of our German fellow citizens, Mr. Henry Oertling, has been called to that land from whence there is no return - he died on Sunday afternoon at 2:30p.m., at 68 years old. Oertling was born in Mecklinburg-Schwerin, but came here early in his youth. He had a turbulent life. When he was about 25, he ran a lumber business, however business setbacks and losses required him to cease his work. For a while, he found a position with the Louisiana National Bank, but gave this up and established, with support from his friends, the hardware store on Poydras Street with the firm name H Oertling & Co Lim. For years, he suffered from Asthma and Rheumatism, and although he was always friendly and lively, he was also always in a depressed mood, and he actually greeted death, in his approach, as a liberator. The departed was one of the oldest members of Germania Lodge No 29 I.O.O.F. (International Order of Odd Fellows); as well as the Low German Club, the Mechanics, Dealers and Lumberman's Exchange, the German Protestant Orphanage Society, etc., and he was loved and respected by all who knew him. He leaves behind a widow, 2 sons, and multiple daughters. He was taken yesterday afternoon from his apartment on Bienville Street to his final resting place (Odd Fellows Cemetery at foot of Canal Street). May this man so much tested in life now rest in peace. We offer our most sincere sympathy to the inconsolable survivors.
