Jacob Schoen. - The news of the death of Jacob Schoen, which occurred yesterday morning at 4 o’clock, was received with profound sorrow by his large circle of friends. Mr. Schoen was one of the best-known citizens of the Third district, and was the pioneer undertaker, having been identified with this business since 1874, when he formed partnership with H.L. Frantz. His death was looked for for (sic) some time by his family and intimate friends, as he suffered with an incurable disease. The best medical attention and kind ministration of wife and children were of no avail, and thus passed away to his eternal rest a man who was loved by all who knew him for the traits of character which make true and lasting friends. Mr. Schoen was a native of Germany, having been born at Elglach, by Worstadi, Hesse Darmstadt, June 8, 1841. He came to this country in 1850. He was a boss longshoreman and the partner of Philip Levy, one of the most prominent stevedores on the river front at that time. He remained in this business for seven years, after which he entered that of an undertaker. He formed a partnership in 1874 with H.L. Frantz, and the new firm succeeded Jacob Kleis in the undertaking establishment at 155 North Peters street, and in March, 1883, succeeded John Grayer, adding 35, 37 and 39 Elysian Fields street to his business apartments. H.L. Frantz disposed of his share to Mr. Schoen in 1879, and the father then took his eldest son, Philip, into the business, under the firm name of Jacob Schoen & Son, which firm existed at the time of his death. Mr. Schoen took a trip to his birth-place in 1881 and visited several other European cities of importance. He was married three times, and lived many years at his residence, 3015 Royal street. Five children were born to the first union and three children to the second marriage. The surviving children are: Philip, John and Lewis Schoen, Mrs. Joseph Leonard, Mrs. F. Faust and Misses Barbara, Maggie and Louise Schoen. He had thirteen grandchildren. All day yesterday the parlors of the home were filled with the sorrowing friends of Mr. Schoen. Floral tributes mutely told of the esteem in which Mr. Schoen was held. Among those who came were business men who knew him in life and were endeared to him by ties that death alone could sever, filed up and gazed with mute sorrow on their friend: and Sisters of different religious orders, who had known his charitable hand when they stood in need of assistance, came with several orphans from the asylums and said their beads for his soul. Mr. Schoen was a devout Catholic and was prepared for death by the reception of the last sacraments of the church. He was an active member of the following associations: Firemen’s Charitable and Benevolent Association, Jackson, United Brethren, Orleans, Washington, Allgemeiner Arbeiter Verein, Louisiana Grove No. 13, C.A.O.D.; Louisiana Benevolent, Olympic, Dentsche Gesellschaft von New Orleans, Louisiana Gewerbe Verein, Deutsche Louisiana Draymen, St. Sebastian Branch, C.K.A.: Manhattan, St. Boniface, Board of Directors Firemen's Building Association, Third District Building Association, New Orleans Funeral Directors' Association, Turn Verein, Gardeners' Mutual and Protective Association, Cotton Yardmen's Eureka Rifle Club, Crescent Cool Club, Ladies' Helping Hand Circle, St. Joseph Benevolent Association and Co-operative of the Holy Trinity Church. The funeral services will take place this afternoon at 3 o'clock from his late residence, 3015 Royal street. The body will be taken to Holy Trinity Church, in St. Ferdinand street, where the solemn office of the dead will be chanted by several priests. The interment will occur in the St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery in Louisa street.
