H. Williams, age 79 a resident of New Orleans, La, passed away on March 19, 2016. She was a graduate of Walter L. Cohen and Manpower Development and Training. She was an active member of Genesis Missionary Baptist Church, the Freedman's Chorus, Fellowship Choir, E.L. Moore Women's Auxiliary, and the Christian Ministers Union. She was one of the first African American nurse's assistants to work at Hotel Dieu Hospital and retired as an emergency room clerk at University Hospital after 35 years of service. Joyce's talents and gifts were many, she was most known for her voice, sharp wit, patience and love of God. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Preceded in death by her son, Phillip Harris, parents, Isadore and Alice Thornton, her stepmom Florence B. Thornton, first husband David L. Harris, her brother Matthew L. Bouligney, cousin Benjamin Bernard, and grandson Allende Fraise. She is survived by her husband Edgar Williams, children Cherrilyn Chester, David (Roberta) Harris, Earl (Mary) Harris, Warren Harris, Brenda Palmer, and Emile Harris, 21 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren, one great, great, grandchild and a host of family and friends. Relatives and friends of the family, as well as pastors, officers and members of Genesis Missionary Baptist Church, Second Mt. Calvary, Second Morning Star, Franklin Avenue, Mt. Calvary of Fairfield, CA and Fellowship Missionary Baptist Churches, members of E.L. Moore Women's Auxiliary #2, Louisiana Freedmen Missionary Baptist General Association, Christian Minister's Union, employees of Mercer in San Francisco, CA, and of University Hospital (formerly Hotel Dieu) are invited to attend the funeral service to be held on March 24, 2016, 10:00am, at St. John Institutional Missionary Baptist Church, 2538 Jackson Ave, New Orleans, LA 70113, host pastor Rev. Louis S. Jones, Rev. Louis Calep III, Officiating. Visitation will begin at 8:00 am until service time at the above named church. Interment: Mt. Olivet Cemetery, New Orleans, La. Memorial contributions can be made to the Genesis MBC building fund or Melba Kemp Community Center.
