JEWISH BURIALS IN NEW ORLEANS. 1828-1848, Orleans Parish, Louisiana Submitted by: the Louisiana Genealogical and Historical Society April 1998 ************************************************* Submitted to the LAGenWeb Archives ************************************************ Copyright. Contributed by Wilbur E. Meneray In 1828 the Jewish residents of New Orleans formed the first Jewish congregation in Louisiana, the Gates of Mercy [Shanarai Chasset]. The second objective of a Jewish congregation, after establishing a synagogue, was to provide for proper burial. The Gates of Mercy quickly obtain a burial ground at the corner of Jackson and Saratoga. For two decades the Gates of Mercy was religious burial ground for members of the congregation and their families and for Jewish "strangers," or non- members in the city only several days. Although the vast majority of the burials were for New Orleans Jews, some of those buried in the Gates of Mercy ground had died in Baton Rouge and as far away as Natchitoches. The names below are taken from a list made by one person in the mid- nineteenth century and is apparently based upon a survey of the records existing at the time that the listing was made and from a visual survey of the cemetery. On a few records that are incomplete there is a notation that "no other records found" and in the case of one grave site, "Epitaph on wood. Inscriptions intelligble [sic]." The list also occasionally mentions occupation. The original listing is part of the Touro Synagogue Papers in the Manuscript Section of the Tulane University Library. The major editorial change in preparing the list below was the elimination of the name of some children, and obvious mistakes in the listing of names have been changed. Original spellings have been kept with the caution that some of the names have a variety of possible spellings. For example, the list mentions J. F. Levy of London, who died in 183_; yet Korn's **Early Jews of New Orleans** cites the death of this English actor as J. F. Levie.
