H. H. Filhiol of Sinope, La., was born in the town of Monroe, in 1845.  His
father, John . Filhiol, also a native of Monroe, La., was born in 1815, and
received his education in the common schools. He was a merchant, planter
and navigator.  He began merchandising at Monroe, La., in 1841, an later at
Logtown in 1865, and there established quite a reputation as a salesman.
He was married in 1841 to Miss Nancy St. Clair Bellew, who bore him three
children.  The eldest son, Grammont, was killed at the battle of
Chancellorsville during the Civil war.  The subject of this sketch was the
second in order of birth, and R. M. the youngest.  H. H. Filhiol, received
his education in the common schools of this place, in and around Monroe,
and enlisted in Company I, of the Fourth Louisiana cavalry in 1863 and
served in the confederate army for two years.  He is an active politician
and is identified with many of the prominent local interests.  He is an
extensive planter on the Ouachita river, in the southern part of Ouachita
parish, his principal crops being cotton and corn.  He and his family are
members of the Catholic church.  He was married in 1875 to Miss Louisa A.
Farrand, a native of Louisiana, who was born in 1850.  They have had six
children, all of whom are living except one who died in infancy.  John B.,
the eldest, was born in 1876; Joseph Roland in 1880; Alfred F. in 1882;
Estelle N. and Mary L. (twins) were born in the year 1887.
