Smith Dear Sir, I have just learned from a reliable source that your brother, William H. Smith was wounded in a skirmish north of the Arkansas river a short time since and that he has since died. A ball entered just below the right eye and passed out behind the right ear. Before he went on the fatal expedition he deposited with me fourteen hundred and fifty dollars Confederate money which [I] now hold. It has already by act of Congress been taxed one third which leaves really $966.73. You will please break this news to Mr. Smith in such manner as you may think proper. Your brother had when he parted with me a good horse and some money but I am not able to say how much. I hope however that his friends in Col. Jackman's command will talke care of these things. Having no means of sending the effects in my hands to his widow I will hold it subject to order. Please tell Mr. William McLure that his son who was shot in both legs at the battle of Jenkin's Ferry is doing well and will soon be up again. No news, health good, crops good, weather warm. My kind regards to your good lassey (?), Very Respectfully Yours, Caleb S. Stouse (?)
