June 22nd, 1899 Commissioner's Pension Bureau Baton Rouge, La. Dear Sirs: - I hand you herewith application of Mrs. E.C. Smith for pension as widow of Confederate soldier under act of 1898. Mrs. Smith is becoming aged and is really in need of the assistance if you can give it to her. Her husband enlisted near Baton Rouge or Donaldsonville, La. but she does not know the command or the exact time though says it was some time in September or October, 1861. We enclose herewith a number of letters relating to the death of her husband which should prove without doubt the validity of her claim. It seems that deceased went into Gen. Price's army from the time of his en-listment, going into Arkansas and Missouri. We feel satisfied that this claim will be allowed and request that whatever the decision of you gentlement that you return the enclosed letters as she prizes them very highly. The news paper clipping was one she saw in a Texas paper and put into her scrap book. The writer knows that for the past ten or fif-teen years the applicant has been living with her sister, Mrs. Faulk, who has contributed to her support, but who herself is greatly reduced in cir-cumstances and barely has enough for her own sussistence. Trusting this application will meet with your approval, Dictated). Yours very truly, John M. Munholland
