Failing to return at the appointed time, Mr. Ward started to learn the cause of her stay. In crossing the Choudrant bridge he saw her body in the bayou. Her throat was cut, there were several knife wounds in the breast, one on the thigh and one eye had been put out. The body showed signs of having been defloured (sic). Up to Tuesday no clue to the perpetrators of the hellish crime had been discovered. The neighborhood is greatly excited and every possible means adopted to find out the guilty parties. Mrs. Ward was the daughter of Mr. Carmichael, of Tuskeege, Ala., and much beloved by her friends and acquaintance.
