Tom was brought to this town a slave some 40 years ago by Major Bry. He acquired his freedom by purchase and lived a life of industry. Where Grace church now stands, he kept many years ago a livery stable. He was an excellent barber, kept a saloon and a restaurant on Grand street since the war, and some years ago had money, but died poor. He was attentive to business, knew his place, and always kept it # # #
