A. Gunby, one of the Circuit Judges for the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals arrived in our town for the purpose of trying Judge D. I. Norwood on a writ of habeas corpus, for the killing of Thos. J. Polk. Early Friday morning he opened court and the trial began. It was long and tiresome to the officers of the court and the attorneys, who worked hard and dispatched business rapidly. The District Attorney, Hon. Ed. F. Newman, did all in his power to make a case of murder, and did his duty in every way, but the untiring efforts of defendant’s counsel, Messrs. Roberts & Roberts, were rewarded by his Honor’s decisions, and Judge Norwood is now out on a bond of $4000. The decision of Judge Gunby was one that would do credit to any Judge of any State, and was satisfactorily received by very one present. He is an honor to the bench, and we are pleased with the dignified manner in which he conducts his court. The trial lasted five days, and Judge Gunby left for his home in Monroe on Wednesday last. – West Carroll Watchman. # # #
