The dead: WILLIAM H. TAYLOR. proprietor of the hotel. ANDREW CARR of Baton Rouge, La. J.H. CUMMINS of Bienville, La. Another boarder whose name is not known is missing. The Ouachita House was an old landmark and is said to have been built seventy-five years ago. Additional Comments: The Ouachita House was one of the earliest boarding houses in Monroe. It was originally known as the Hunsicker, named after the owner J.L. Hunsicker. It was built like a Swiss chateau, with two large galleries extending along the entire front. Arched lattice work partly enclosed the gallery on the second floor. The building was finished in a light brown tone, with trimmings a darker shade of the same color. After Hunsicker died in 1878, the building was leased by F.G. Key and renamed the Ouachita House. In the 1880's it was sold to a Mr. Purvis. After the building burned, the land was bought by the Sugar brothers and what would become the Paramount Theatre was built on it in 1915.
