ABELL Kilpatrick Funeral Home Monroe, LA Nelson Dyer Abell, 82, passed away quietly at his home on January 12, 2006 after a lengthy illness, following a stroke in 1997. Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 14, 2006 at First Presbyterian Church of Monroe, LA. Interment will follow at Riverview Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Monroe. Mr. Abell was born July 22, 1923 to Nelson D. and Helen Dixon Abell of Monroe. He was preceded in death by his sister, Helen. Nelson graduated from Ouachita Parish High School, and received an engineering degree from Georgia Tech. He played collegiate basketball and captained the Yellow Jacket tennis team. He served as a decorated submarine officer aboard the U.S.S. Hoe in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. Mr. Abell began his business career with Ford, Bacon, and Davis. He was a pioneer in various agricultural businesses throughout the country. He founded Abell Corporation and its three operating divisions, Ouachita Fertilizer Company, Texas Liquid Fertilizer, and Poly Processing Company. Nelson offered leadership to a number of community and industry groups including, Elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Monroe; Director of Monroe Little League; Chairman of the St. Francis Medical Center Board of Directors; President of the Northeast Louisiana University Foundation; General Chairman of the United Way Campaign; founding Chairman of the Ouachita Enterprise Corporation; President of the Fertilizer Institute and President of the National Fertilizer Solutions Association. Among honors he received include the Georgia Tech Engineering Hall of Fame, and the Total Person Scholar Athlete Award; an honorary doctorate from Northeast Louisiana University; the LSU Hall of Distinction; a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary; the St. Francis Mother Gertrude Hennessy Humanitarian Award and the Monroe Chamber of Commerce David Silverstein Award. Devoted to his family, Mr. Abell is survived by his wife of fifty-eight years, Bennie Hughes Abell; three sons and their wives: Nelson III and Stephanie of Monroe, Hughes and Betsy of Austin, TX and Dixon and Martha of Monroe; seven grandchildren: Graham and Claire, Lucy and Sam, Harold and Mary Martha and Helen and her husband Heber Tuft. Pallbearers will be Kent Anderson, Jack Files, Roy Johns, Tex Kilpatrick, Burchell Liles, George Link, Armand McHenry, Charles Petrus, Charles Venable and Dwight Vines. Serving as ushers at the church will be Bill Apel, Skip Bell, Lee Carbrey, Neil Douglas and Clyde White. The family appreciates caregivers since 1997, Jerry Harris, Henry Harris and their staff.
