Richard Humphries officiating under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe. Mr. Ackel died on Saturday, January 21, 2006. He was a charter member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church. He graduated from Ouachita Parish High School, Northeast Louisiana Junior College (ULM), and Louisiana Polytechnical Institute (La Tech) with a degree in engineering. He was a Registered Professional Engineer and belonged to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. During WWII, as a captain of the 7th Ferrying Group, Carter flew a variety of aircraft, most notably the B 17 "Flying Fortress". He was a member of the Monroe Chapter of Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He was a member of Bayou DeSiard Country Club where he retired to play golf. Mr. Ackel also enjoyed playing in an annual golfing tour with his friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Eli E. Ackel, and his mother, Frances Barton Ackel. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Jeannette Peck Ackel; three children, Charles Scott Ackel and wife, Donna of Jacksonville, Florida, Jeri Ackel Kelly and husband, David of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Richard Barton Ackel of Atlanta, Georgia; four grandsons, Jeffrey Scott Ackel and Andrew Jordan Ackel of Atlanta, Georgia, and Carter Alexander Kelly and James Barton Kelly of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Pallbearers will be Charles Ackel, Barton Ackel, David Kelly, Jeffrey Ackel, Andrew Ackel, Barton Kelly, Carter Kelly and Steve Melton. Honorary pallbearers will be Billy Edmondson, George Luffey, Jasper Haddad, Klien Crow, Jimmy Lamb, Charles McDonald, Ronald Gunter, Paul Kilpatrick, Wallace L. "Wally" Jones, W. M. "Bucky" McElroy, H. W. "Buddy" Tolson, Ersel D. Elmore, L. E. "Bobby" Lemoine, and Bill Buford.
