VERNON CODY "BUCK" ADKINS

Funeral services for Mr. Vernon Cody "Buck" Adkins, 86, of Monroe, will be 
held at 12:00 PM Monday, May 11, 2009, at Grace Episcopal Church with Rev. 
Gregg Riley officiating. Interment will follow in Mulhearn Memorial Park 
Cemetery under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, 
Monroe.

Mr. Adkins was born in Homer, LA on May 1, 1923, and was reared in Harris 
Community, Claiborne Parish, LA. He and his wife of 58 years, Christine 
Eversull Adkins, lived in Jonesboro, LA for over 40 years before moving to 
Monroe in 1998, after his retirement.

Mr. Adkins was a graduate of Louisiana State University with a Bachelor of 
Science degree in Forestry. He was a veteran of the United States Armed Forces 
serving in the United States Army during World War II and in the United States 
Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He retired from Smurfit Stone Container, 
Wood Procurement, as Area Manager of Operations for the Hodge Region after a 
38 year career in forestry. He was very active in the Society of American 
Foresters and served on the Board and many committees of the Louisiana 
Forestry Association. He was also a longtime member of the Jonesboro Hodge 
Lions Club, serving a term as President.

An avid duck hunter and outdoorsman, Buck spent many enjoyable days in his 
duck blind on Turkey Creek. He played freshman football at LSU prior to being 
drafted into service for World War II and was always an enthusiastic supporter 
of LSU athletics. Buck took great pleasure in spending time with his children, 
grandchildren, and many friends. He could always be seen around Monroe at his 
grandchildren's events. He was beloved by many and will be missed by all who 
knew him.

Mr. Adkins was preceded in death by his father, John Critt Adkins; mother, 
Inez McKenzie Adkins; sister, Modena Lowrey; and brother, James Buchanan 
Adkins.

Survivors include his wife, Christine Eversull Adkins; daughters, Alice Adkins 
Jordan and husband John T., Elizabeth Adkins Butler and husband Robert 
O. "Bob", Jr., and Margaret Adkins Hastings and husband E. Eugene "Gene"; 
granddaughters, Kate Jordan; Mary Minor, Elizabeth Anne and Jeanne Cody 
Butler; grandsons, Cooper and McKenzie Hastings; sisters, Maxine Mayo of 
Shreveport, LA, and Eloise Bennett of San Augustine, TX; sister-in-law, Helen 
Adkins of Benton, LA, brother-in-law, Leonard Eversull and wife Pearl of 
Houston, TX; and many nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Ronnie McDanell, Jerry Pender, Eddie Ralph Harmon, Frank 
Trude, R. Cody Mayo, Jr., and Wayne Earpe.

Visitation will be from 10:30 AM until 12:00 PM Monday in Kilbourne Hall at 
Grace Episcopal Church.

Memorials may be made to Grace Episcopal Church.
