Graveside Interment service will be held at 12:00 Noon, Monday, April 20, 2015, at Springhill City Cemetery, Springhill, LA under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home of Monroe. She was the daughter of Dr. Rupert and Katherine Butler and was born October 17, 1919, in Springhill, LA. She attended the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville where she was a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority. There she developed a lifelong friendship with six sorority sisters. They continued to meet annually until 2008 at an age of 88. She also enjoyed playing bridge and was in many bridge groups throughout the years. She was an avid traveler throughout the states and many countries. She loved her church and maintained a strong interest in the work of missionaries around the world. Marjorie married Joseph Vernon Akins in June of 1939. Throughout their marriage they lived in several towns - Springhill, LA; Bastrop, LA; Vicksburg, MS and Texarkana, TX. After Vernon retired they moved to Monroe, LA, to be close to family. She always had a talent for hospitality and made a home where ever she lived. She is preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Vernon Akins; her son, Joe Frank Akins, and daughters-in law, Doiline Irby Akins and Sherry Deakins Akins. She is survived by her son Wade Akins and wife Barbara, of Memphis TN; daughter Kathy Baker and husband Richard of Monroe; seven grandchildren, Velda Dyson and husband Charlie; Connie Knight; Christy Brawner; Tim Akins and wife Micheline; Jason Akins and wife Charity; Joey Baker and wife Emily; Andy Baker and wife Suzie, and 15 great grandchildren. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, Sunday, April 19, 2015, at Mulhearn Funeral Home of Monroe. Pallbearers will be Joey Baker, Andy Baker, Tim Akins, Jason Akins, David Baker and Lanny Moore.
