SHELBY GLENN "AL" ALFRED

Funeral services celebrating the life of Colonel Shelby Glenn "Al" Alfred, will 
be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, June 24, 2013 at Rose-Neath's Southside Chapel. 
Officiating will be Bro. Freddie Williford and Bro. John Newman. Interment with 
full military honors presented by the U.S. Army Honor Guard will follow in 
Providence Cemetery in Spring Ridge, LA. Visitation with the family will be 
from 3p.m. until 5 p.m. Sunday, June 23, 2013 at the funeral home.

Shelby was born on July 23, 1929 to Schumpert and Dessie Alfred of Bethany, LA.

Shelby passed away Friday, June 21, 2013 at the age of 83, after being 
diagnosed on May 16 with pancreatic cancer. Shelby was predeceased by his 
beloved parents, along with his father and mother-in-law, Hearstel and Florence 
McKown, who loved him as the son they never had.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58½ years, Jean McKown Alfred; his son, 
Stephen Alfred and wife Cindy; his daughter, Cathy Hogan and husband 
Dwayne "Dee"; 5 grandsons and their wives: Caleb and Dee Dee Hogan, Micah and 
Jessica Hogan, Shelby and Kara Alfred, Jeremy and Sara Alfred and Christopher 
and Hannah Alfred; 1 granddaughter and her husband: Kimberley and Craig 
Roberson; 9 great-grandchildren: Gabrielle, Jackson, Chloe, Mayley, Evie, Henry 
Stephen, Taylor, Christian and Isabella.

Shelby graduated from LSU, Baton Rouge in 1951 and entered the Army as a 2nd 
Lieutenant. He served in the Korean War as part of the 49th Field Artillery 
Battalion reconnaissance unit, receiving a bronze star for meritorious 
defensive action on the front lines. Upon his marriage to Jean in 1954, "Al" 
left active duty but continued to serve in the Army Reserves until his 
retirement in 1989, having been promoted to the rank of colonel.

Shelby and Jean moved to Shreveport where he began a 31 year career with United 
Gas Pipeline Company. He retired in 1986 as a regional manager. Some of his 
most cherished friendships were his fellow employees. He was a faithful member 
of Ford Park Baptist Church and the "Faith-Keepers" Sunday School Class.

Shelby embraced life with a passion and was a gifted storyteller. He was a wise 
investor of time and resources. He invested in deep friendships. His greatest 
investment was in his family. To his grandchildren, he was larger than life. 
There was no one on earth they respected more than their Papa. He leaves them a 
legacy of acceptance and unconditional love, an example of brotherly kindness 
and courage, faithfulness and godliness. He was a man who honored God with his 
life and in his death.

Memorials may be made to Ford Park Baptist Church or Grace Home (Christus 
Hospice).

Special thanks to all who cared for him in the hospital, home health, hospice, 
and Grace Home. Thanks to God for His tender mercies and for the many people 
who prayed for us through this difficult time.
