She was the sixth of seven children born to "Charlie" and "Maggie" Nesbit Hill who all preceded her in death, as did her husband Elon Allen, son Sherman Allen, Sr. and great granddaughter Cheyenne Allen. Hettie started her journey to heaven when she put her faith and trust in Jesus Christ after hearing singing and preaching at Lone Pine Baptist Church from her sick bed one mile away. When physically able she was baptized at Lone Pine Baptist Church (1940 era) where she served many years as clerk, Sunday School teacher and Women's Missionary Union Director. After 1950, Hettie supplemented the family income by waiting tables in West Monroe, clerking at Dupree Grocery, managing the Rag Barn in Winnsboro, owning and operating Allen's Grocery and The Hide-away-House, a craft shop at her home on Harris Lake. In April, 1993 she and husband entered a local nursing home where she spent her time birdwatching, crocheting, making greeting cards, praying, reading sewing, and tending flowers as long as the body and mind would allow. After her husband's death she pursued her life-long dream of painting landscapes on canvas. In her eighties she united with Crockett Point Baptist Church to be with most of her family. A homegoing celebration will be held at Crockett Point Baptist Church on Sunday, January 23, 2011, at 2:00 PM with the visitation on Saturday evening, January 22, 2011, from 5:00 PM til 9:00 PM and Sunday, January 23, 2011, beginning at 12:30 PM at the chruch. Minister great grandsons, Jason Herrington and John Patrick Handy will officiate the services. Hettie leaves a legacy of creative artistic talent and faith with a passion to serve God and spread the gospel to a family that will be in charge of the services including her daughter, Barbara Allen Russell, six grandchildren and their spouses in order of birth: Karon Russell Eldridge, Miriam Russell and Ricky Caldwell, Marilyn Allen and Kim Wilson, Gary and Penny Russell, Susan Allen and John Handy, Sherman, Jr. and Jill Allen; 11 great grandchildren: LaJuan Caldwell and Mark McMurray, Russell and Jodi Caldwell, Jason and Melissa Herrington, Reid and Betsy Caldwell, Staci Wilson, Abigail Handy and Kevin Berry, Michael and Mindy Wilson, John Patrick and Juliana Handy, MaKayla Allen and Ainsley Noel; 7 great great grandchildren: Kylie McMurray, Ryder, Jacob and Gabe Caldwell, Hunter and Maddy Caldwell, and Layla Grayce Berry.
