GEORGE V. ARMSTRONG

Col. George V. Armstrong, US Air Force, retired, departed this life August 11, 
2014. He was born on July 28, 1918, to George V. and Violet Armstrong in 
Washington, DC.

After graduation from Maryland Park High School in 1935, he later earned a 
Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Illinois and Jackson College 
in Hawaii. Prior to his military service, he worked for the US Post Office and 
the Potomac electric power company in Washington, DC.

Shortly after graduation in 1935, he joined the US Marine Corp as a member of 
the Marine Scouting Squadron 3, stationed at US Naval Air Station, Anacostia, 
Washington, DC. In December, 1941, when he joined the Army Air Corps, which 
later became the United States Air Force, he was appointed an aviation cadet, 
and reported for active duty in March, 1942. He completed his flying training 
at the Army Air Forces Advanced flying school at Columbus, Mississippi, and 
was commissioned a 2nd Lt. pilot. He was assigned to Selman Field in Monroe, 
LA, and reported there on February 17, 1943. While stationed at Monroe, he met 
the love of his life, "My Mattie", Mattie Lee Glass.

He was the recipient of numerous awards and decorations. In 1947, while 
assigned to the 4149th Electronics Experimental Squadron, he was given a 
special citation by President Harry Truman for his participation in fights 
into extreme weather conditions designed for weather research and to improve 
instrument flying techniques.

He was an active member of the Air Force Association, the Retired Officers 
Association, the Experimental Aircraft Association, and a lifetime member of 
the Sertoma Club. He was a member of Salem Baptist Church.

While serving in the USAF, he was stationed at numerous bases, including bases 
in Alaska and Hawaii. After retiring from the military in North Little Rock, 
Arkansas, in November, 1963, he was appointed as director of a division of the 
department of public safety, state of Arkansas, and also established the Law 
Enforcement Training Academy in Camden, AR, serving under Governors Faubus, 
Rockefeller and Bumpers. He resigned that position in order to accept a 
position as the first director of contract administration for the then 
fledgling Federal Express Corporation. When FedEx moved their operations from 
Little Rock to Memphis in 1972; he stayed in Little Rock and continued flying 
with Central Flying Service until moving to Farmerville, LA in 1979. While in 
Farmerville he continued flying activities at the Farmerville airport, the 
Ruston airport and Selman Field. His flying career started in 1935 when he and 
two friends bought an OX5 powered Fairchild biplane and ended in 1994 with 
27,434 logged flying hours, when he could not renew his FAA pilot's license 
for medical reasons.

Col. Armstrong is survived by his wife of 69 years, Mattie Glass Armstrong, 
his son and his wife, Ronald and Paula Armstrong of North Little Rock, 
Arkansas, three grandchildren, Wellena Armstrong Squires of Cabot, Arkansas, 
Andrue Armstrong of Jacksonville, Arkansas, and Kimberly Armstrong of Little 
Rock, Arkansas, and three great grandchildren, Cierra, Amelia, and Tori of 
Cabot, Arkansas. He is also survived by 3 sets of amazing in-laws, John Drue 
and Novice Taylor of Farmerville, Louisiana, James and Carolyn Taylor of 
Marion, Louisiana, and Sam, Marsha, and Tracy Holland of Ruston, Louisiana.

The viewing will be 5:00-7:00 P.M. Wednesday at Farrar Funeral Home in 
Farmerville, Louisiana. Services will be provided by Farrar Funeral Home in 
Farmerville at 2:30 P.M. on Thursday, August 14, 2014. Following the service, 
Col. Armstrong will be buried with full military honors at Taylor Cemetery.
