John was born in Monroe, Louisiana on November 1, 1946 to John Darington Armstrong and Avis Tucker Armstrong. He was their only child, but was a member of a large extended family. John grew up attending church at Highland Park Baptist Church in Monroe, near his home in Oak Park. Both his mom and his aunt, Mrs. Fay T. Brunson, who shared their home, were very active in the church and thus served as excellent roles for John Dalton. This church community became a family to all of the Armstrong family. John attended the Monroe City Schools and graduated from Neville High School in 1964. He continued his education at Louisiana Tech through 1968, where he graduated in accounting. It was always a matter of great pride that he would graduate from the college, where his grandfather was a member of the faculty. After college graduation, John chose to join the United States Air Force for the next four years. Having been stationed for a year in South Korea, he concluded his service at Hamilton Air Base in Marin County, California. After discharge, he decided to remain in California and seek employment in his chosen field. He moved to San Francisco in 1973 working for a time at an ice company and for the American Institute for Continuing Education. He then was employed by Callan and Associates, where he managed various money functions as an accountant before becoming Accounting Manager. He had only recently retired from this firm. John was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Avis Armstrong of Monroe, and his paternal grandparents, Dalton G. Armstrong and Icy Webb Armstrong of Ruston, along with his maternal grandparents, Jasper Newton Tucker and Emma Futch Tucker of Farmerville. He is survived by a host of cousins, friends, and a much loved family caregiver and friend, Dorothy Moore Jones of Monroe. In accordance with his wishes, Mr. Armstrong's ashes will be scattered in the beautiful waters of the Pacific Ocean near his home. The family asks that any memorials be made to your favorite charity.
