LT. JAMES D. BAKER 

Brown – Holley Funeral Home, 

Rayville, LA 

Funeral services for Lt. James D. Baker (Louisiana State Police Retired) 82, 
of Rayville, LA will be held at 10:00 A.M., Monday, January 7, 2008 in 
Rayville at the Brown-Holley Funeral Home with Roger Johnson officiating. 
Internment with Louisiana State Police and Military honors will be in the 
Antioch Cemetery under the direction of Brown – Holley Funeral Home of 
Rayville. James David Baker, Jimmy as he will be fondly remembered, was born 
to Dewey Sr. and Erline (Boles) Baker on October 10, 1925 in Rayville, LA. 
After losing his battle with cancer, he passed away comfortably at home 
Saturday, January 5, 2008, with family at his side. Jimmy attended Rayville 
High School and entered the Marine Corps in 1943 where he served with the 1st 
Marine Division in the Pacific during World War II and in the Panama Canal 
Zone during The Korean War. Leaving the Marines in 1951, Staff 
Sergeant "Bobwire" Baker returned home to Rayville and attended the Louisiana 
State Police Academy. After 25 years of honorable state service, 
Lieutenant "Stone-Face" Baker retired in 1975 and later worked for the 
Richland Parish Sheriff's Department. In retirement, he enjoyed hunting, 
fishing, wood-working and was famous for his exquisite hand-made boat paddles. 
He loved family, animals, and was always surrounded by his pets or backyard 
wildlife. He is survived by his bride of over 53 years, Betty Jean (Curl) 
Baker of Rayville, daughter Karen DeLynn (Jeffrey) Shoemaker of Monroe, 
grandson Benjamin David (Sarah) Morris and great-grandson Carter David of Oak 
Grove, grandson Mitchell Shea (Rebecca) Morris of Archibald, step-
granddaughter Jodie (Chris) Hager and step-great-grandchildren Victoria and 
Evan of New Carlisle, OH, step-granddaughter Amy Shoemaker of Aurora, CO, 
fellow-Marine Charles Willoughby of Rayville, numerous sisters-in-law, nieces, 
and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, older brother 
Dewey Baker, Jr. and younger brother Marion Dill Baker. Pallbearers will be 
John Fragala, Tommy Thomason, David Thomason, John White, Charlie Heard, and 
Don French. Honorary pallbearers will be all retired and active Louisiana 
State Policeman and retired Marines.
