VERNON T. BALDWIN

Funeral services for Dr. Vernon T. Baldwin, 85, of Winnsboro will be held at 
2:00 p.m., Friday May 11, 2012, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Winnsboro 
with Rev. Daniel Corkery and Rev. James Nellikunnel officiating. Interment 
will follow in Lone Cedar Cemetery under the direction of Gill First National 
Funeral Home Winnsboro, LA.

Dr. Baldwin died Wednesday May 9, 2012 surrounded by family and friends.

He was born in New Orleans, but was reared in Winnsboro after his family moved 
here when he was 5 years old. He knew that medicine was his calling early on 
and wrote in his Winnsboro High School yearbook that his goal in life was to 
be a physician. After graduating at 16 years old, he went to work on his dream 
and started college at Tulane University. His plans took a detour, however, 
when the United States entered World War II, and he left to serve in the Navy 
as a medical corpsman.

After returning home, Baldwin married his true love, Monnie Sharp of 
Winnsboro - who would remain his partner in life as well as an asset in his 
medical practice by helping him keep books and good relations with his 
patients. Baldwin would return to school after his marriage to finish his 
degree at Louisiana Tech and LSU Medical School in New Orleans and completed 
his medical residency in family medicine in Shreveport.

Dr. Baldwin delivered around 2,500 babies, many of which he has had the 
pleasure of caring for as they grew up and had children and even grandchildren 
of their own. He gave his patients a listening ear and a kind heart. After 
years of house calls and office visits caring for the sick in Winnsboro, Dr. 
Baldwin decided to further his education in 1980 and complete a residency in 
diagnostic radiology at LSU in New Orleans.

He is a member of the American Medical Association and the Delta Medical 
Society and has served a chief of staff of Franklin Medical Center many times. 
His service to the community extends beyond his medical practice and he has 
been a faithful parishioner of St. Mary's Catholic Church, a long-time member 
of the Winnsboro Lion's Club and with Winnsboro-Franklin Parish Chamber of 
Commerce. Dr. Baldwin a former Eagle Scout, served as Scoutmaster for Troop 53 
for 10 years. He loved golf and enjoyed playing with his many friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents G. R. and Elsie Borne Baldwin and one 
brother Richard Benjamin Baldwin.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Monnie Baldwin; 3 children and their 
spouses Tommy and Pam Baldwin, Ricky and Joan Baldwin and Susan and Noble 
Ellington all of Winnsboro, LA, grandchildren Brian Baldwin of Homer, Ben and 
Angela Baldwin of Minden, LA, Lauren and Chris Lundgren of Baton Rouge, Robert 
Baldwin of Winnsboro, Leslie and Paul Whittington of Abbeville, LA; Michael 
Ellington of Baton Rouge, LA; Tyler Ellington of West Monroe, LA; and 
Elizabeth Ellington of Baton Rouge, LA; three great-grandchildren Mary 
Elizabeth Baldwin; Ethan and Elle Ann Baldwin.

Serving as pallbearers will be grandsons and grandsons-in-laws.

Honorary pallbearers will be R. V. Arnold, Dwaine Boothe, Leo Cheek, Howard 
Childs, John Cuny, George Gowan, Jimmy Guice, Tommy Hatfield, Buck Hollis, 
Blake Kramer, James McLemore, Ray Sharp, Nick Stephens and Franklin Medical 
Center Staff Physicians.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or St. Mary's 
Catholic Church.
