He was born January 27, 1943, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to Lee Roy and Aileen Knighton Bankston. He was a lifelong Baptist. Gary was an Army veteran, having served in Germany where he was Elvis Presley's quartermaster. He was a graduate of Northeast Louisiana State College, now the University of Louisiana-Monroe, where he was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. Gary was the retired owner of the former Honda World of Fort Smith. Prior, he spent over 20 years working in the recording and home-video industries in sales, promotion and distribution. He loved travel, motorcycles and Corvettes. He shared his love of motorcycles with his son Brian, and the two spent years motocross racing around the country. He and son Douglas shared the love of automobiles and auto racing, attending racing events such as the 12 Hours of Sebring in Florida and the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France. Gary was a lifetime member of the National Corvette Museum and an avid collector-owner of various Corvettes. He was a member of the local Razorback Corvette Club in Fort Smith. His hobbies included fishing and most recently model trains. Gary is survived by his wife Alice Butler Bankston, Charleston, Ark.; sons Douglas Lee Bankston of Bentonville, Ark., and Brian Garett Bankston of Charleston, Ark.; and grandsons Tyler, Evan and Garett Bankston. Gary requested no service and that his ashes be scattered per his wishes. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association . Cremation arrangements and services are under the direction of Brotherton Brothers Funeral Home and Flower Shop in Charleston.
