JOHNNIE BAYLES Kilpatrick Funeral Home West Monroe, LA Funeral services for Mr. Johnnie Bayles, 91, of West Monroe, LA will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, June 13, 2009 in the chapel of Kilpatrick Funeral Home West Monroe, LA. with Rev. Jerry Edmondson officiating. Interment will follow at New Chapel Hill Cemetery, West Monroe, LA under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home West Monroe, LA. Mr. Bayles was born September 10, 1917 in Point, LA to the late John W. and Leila Cox Bayles. He attended school at Ouachita Parish High School and Northeast College and remained a lifelong resident of West Monroe and passed away June 10, 2009 in West Monroe, LA. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years, Laverne Kent Bayles; brothers, Barney Bayles and Elvin Bayles and a sister, Marie Bayles Colvin. Mr. Bayles was a veteran of World War II where he served in the Army Air Force in Phillipines. In the late 1950's he started Johnnie Bayles Supply Co., Inc. a wholesale Lawn & Garden distribution company and expanded its operation to a three state area before closing in the early 1990's. During that time he was active and served on the Board of Wholesale Lawn & Garden Distributors Association, being elected President in 1964. He founded and operated Johnnie Bayles Garden Mart until it was sold and operated as Sonny Panzico's Garden Mart. After retirement, he grew tomatoes and Angle Trumpet flowers at his home as well as "JB Secret Formula." Many people loved to visit his home for the conversation as well as the products. Mr. Bayles was a member of First Baptist Church of West Monroe for 53 years and a deacon for many of those years. He was the Director of the Tennison Sunday School Class for over 30 years. Also, he was a member and past President of the West Monroe Rotary Club, receiving the coveted A.O. Evans award. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, J. Mack Bayles and Lynn of Atlanta, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda Bayles Calk and Kenneth of West Monroe, LA; sister and brother-in-law, Gladys Faye Bayles Welch and Ed of Stockbridge, GA; five grandchildren Scott Bayles and wife Jeri of Baton Rouge, LA; Cynthia Chapman Place and husband Tim of West Monroe, LA; David Bayles and wife Dina of Grapevine, TX; Angela Chapman of West Monroe, LA; fifteen great- grandchildren, six step-grandchildren and eight step-great grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Scott Bayles, David Bayles, Alvin Rhodes, W.F. "Billy" Tubbs, Richard Gates and Gene Simmons.
