BERNHARDT Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 11, 2013, at 1:00 PM in La Chapelle de Martin & Castille in Lafayette, for John D. Bernhardt, age 60, who died on Friday, February 8, 2013 at M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston, after a lengthy and recurring battle with cancer. Reverend Michael Delcambre, Pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Cecilia, will conduct the funeral services. A Graveside Service will be held later in the week at Old City Cemetery in Monroe, Louisiana. John is survived by his daughter, Katie Bernhardt and was preceded in death by his parents, Diehlmann Courtney and Anne Rieves Bernhardt. John graduated from Louisiana State University and later obtained a law degree from Loyola University. He worked in Lafayette as an attorney and was the owner and President of Empire Energy. He served on many boards and commissions over the years including LSU College of Humanities & Social Sciences Advisory Council; Former Chairman of the Louisiana Public Facilities Authority; Acadiana Center for the Arts; State Mineral Board; and Lafayette Parish Democratic Executive Committee. John Bernhardt had four interests in life-LSU athletics, the game of golf, Louisiana politics, and the oil business, but only one love, his daughter Katie, to whom he was a wonderful dad. His quick wit, jovial laugh and compassionate heart will be missed and leave a void in the life of all who knew him. He fought his battle with cancer just as he lived his life - with courage, dignity, and a sense of humor. He truly lived each moment of life to the fullest. John will be missed by friends from all over the world. His love of golf ran deeper than the mere sport of it. Throughout his life, he traveled the globe, studying golf course design and architecture, building lasting friendships along the way. He was a member of Oakbourne Country Club in Lafayette, Louisiana, Champions Golf Club in Houston, The Olympic Club in San Francisco, the Monterey Peninsula Country Club in Pebble Beach, California and Mountain Lake in Lake Wales, Florida. John would have loved a Mardi Gras week like this one. In healthier times, he would have rolled effortlessly from his duties as a Lieutenant in The Krewe of Mystic Louisianians in Washington, D.C. to his roll down St. Charles as a veteran member of Bacchus. The flambeau will be shining brightly this Sunday night in his memory for all who knew him. The family requests that visitation be observed in Martin & Castille's DOWNTOWN Lafayette location on Monday, February 11, 2013 from 11:00 AM until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to LSU TAF, P. O. Box 711, Baton Rouge, LA 70821, Attn: John Bernhardt Memorial Golf Fund.
