A memorial service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 7, at First United Methodist Church in Shreveport. The Dr. R. Pat Day and Rev. Carl Rhoads will officiate. Charles was born on Oct. 31, 1950, in Camden, N.J. He was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, and earned a master's degree in business administration from Suffolk University in Boston, Mass. For more than 36 years, Charles represented World's Finest Chocolate in the Ark-La-Tex. He was loved and held in the highest esteem by all of his customers and was fondly referred to as "The Candy Man." Through his unselfish dedication to fundraising efforts in area schools, Charles made possible countless improvements to schools throughout northwest Louisiana including air conditioners and curtains, among other amenities. His work and dedication also helped support and grow numerous charitable organizations throughout the region. Charles was an active member of First United Methodist Church and the Quester's Sunday School Class. For many years, Charles humbly gave his time and talent to feed those less fortunate at the church's Love Feast on Christmas Day. He drove the church's "Chariots of Fire Golf Car" most Sundays, helping members to the sanctuary. Charles previously served on the YMCA Board of Directors and was currently serving on the Supervisory Board of ANECA Federal Credit Union. He was a member of the Shreveport Rugby Football Club for 36 years. Charles was a charter member of the Krewe of Centaur and Krewe of Highland, formerly serving as the King of SPAM. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, William Spencer Black and Doris Rae Helsengren Black, both of Grand Prairie, Texas. He is survived by his "present" wife of 36 years, Lounelle Campbell Black; two daughters, Rachel Louise Black Caudle and her husband, Taylor of Fort Worth, Texas; and Charlotte Spencer Black of Dallas, Texas. He also is survived by his brother, Kendall Marshall Black of Grand Prairie, Texas, and a sister, Beverly M. Black and her husband, Robert Bruce of Arlington, Texas; sister-in-law, Teleda Campbell Whittington and her husband, Frank of Baton Rouge, La.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Charles was a loving husband and father. Rachel and Charlotte always will hold dear the many memories of their father welcoming their friends to their home and making breakfast for all who showed up at the table. He made sure that everyone left full, not only from his wonderful cuisine, but also full of his charismatic stories and love of life. Charles will mostly be remembered by family and friends for his huge heart. One could not find a more generous person. You could not leave his presence without him giving you something to take with you. His devotion to God was evident through his dedication and generosity to his community, neighbors, friends and beloved family. He was a friend to all. Honorary pallbearers are Taylor Caudle, Robert Bruce, Frank Whittington, Joshua Bruce-Black, Nathan Bruce-Black, Will Whittington, John Kinnebrew, Andrew Kinnebrew, Steve Roberts, Lane Causey, Paul Wilson, Richard Gibbs, Bill Mitchell, Ken Hayes, Dave Buker, Bill Bynum, Chris Evans, Tom Lawson, members of the Quester's Sunday School Class, all the World's Finest Chocolate sales representatives, members of the Krewe of the Vine, and the gentlemen of the Shreveport Rugby Football Club. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to First United Methodist Church, the American Cancer Society or a charity of the donor's choice .
