BLACKMON JR. Graveside Funeral Services for Doctor Edward S. Blackmon, Jr. will be held on Sunday October 3, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home in West Monroe. Reverend Mark Fenn, Global Ministries Pastor of First Baptist Church, West Monroe will be officiating. Dr. Blackmon was born July 10, 1920 in El Paso, Texas. He was the 3rd child of Mary Amelia Kornman and Edward Sylvester Blackmon. After the death of his mother in 1936, he moved to Louisiana to live with his aunts and graduated from Ouachita Parish High School. Sergeant Blackmon began serving in the U.S. Army in 1942 and spent 9 months in Germany. After his discharge in January 1946, he enrolled at Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee. Upon graduation he opened a practice in Delhi then later in West Monroe where he practiced Optometry for over 50 years. In 1966 he was elected Alderman for the City of West Monroe and enjoyed serving his community. He and Evelyn toured Europe, Asia, Australia and The Holy Lands and had great stories to tell about their travels. They even escorted two of their granddaughters to Russia for their high school graduations. He was a member of First Baptist Church of West Monroe and the Monroe Lions Club. Dr. Blackmon is survived by his wife of 68 years, Evelyn Louise Kinnison Blackmon, his son Dr. Larry Blackmon and wife Dency, and his daughter Jan Blackmon Mattingly and husband Dale. He is also survived by 5 granddaughters, D'Anne and Corey Bennett, Angela and Rob Hammond, Amy and Jeremy Many, Ashley and Shannon Harper, and Kinbur Blackmon. He has 9 great- grandchildren Reed and Emma Bennett, Abby and Garrett Hammond, Mase, Kross, and Brees Many, and Cam and Crew Harper and his faithful and loyal feathered friend "Willie" from Caney Lake. He was affectionately known as "Granny" by his granddaughters and great-grandchildren. He is survived by 3 nieces Betsy Blackmon Smith, Beverly Blackmon Guthrie, and Jayne Griffis Smith. He was preceded in death by his sister, Roslyn Griffis and his brother Paul Blackmon.
